HTC Hero CDMA (Sprint)

Sprint HTC Hero

Sprint HTC Hero

The HTC Hero was my first true smart phone.  I bought it because I wanted something similar to the iPhone that was on Sprint.  In all honesty when I heard about the EVO a couple of weeks later I really wished I had waited a bit longer to upgrade my phone.

I lived with my decision for a bit over a year though and used my Hero as my everyday cell phone.  Below is a brief recap of my experiences over that year.

I bought the phone and immediately started playing with it and downloading applications.  The Sense user interface that HTC built was very nice and polished.  I felt I was lacking something though.  I am a very technical person and had been reading up on Google’s Android for quite some time and this just didn’t feel right.

I rooted my phone so I could take more control of it.  Once I rooted it I put the Fresh ROM on it.  The Fresh ROM is based off of HTC’s Sense UI and was very familiar to what I had already been using and still didn’t feel complete.

After about 6 months I did flash the CyanogenMod ROM to the phone.  Now I had the experience I had been looking for, for the most part.  I had the ability to use many apps that were not available to a Sense UI user for some reason, but I missed the polished look of the Sense UI.

I also started having some issues with the hardware itself after the second upgrade to CyanogenMod that I installed.  The Hero is an underpowered Android device and as such I was pushing it past the capabilities.  I also had an issue where my volume button snapped where the + crossed the button.  The volume buttons still worked, it was just a sharp edge on the volume up button.

Overall the phone was a great entry into the Android world and smart phones.  It was also a great tool for me to learn about rooting and customizing my phone.  The people who I would recommend this phone to is anyone who does not plan to hack their phone like I did, the phone is a great entry phone for people trying out Android phones for the first time.  I also recommend the phone to those who do want to hack their phone and customize it like I did but don’t want to risk a more expensive phone for their first attempts.

Google Voice Transcription

This is the first of a new series here. I use Google Voice exclusively for my voicemail service. I use an Android phone so the setup is dead simple, and my voicemail gets transcribed for easier and quicker message access in differente situations.  Most of the voicemail will be from my wife, others may appear as permission is granted by the person leaving the voicemail.

As with most voice-to-text software though there are a few holes and this area will highlight some of the funniest. I will post the audio from the voicemail as well as the transcribed text.

Hey Honey, It’s me. I just want to call and let you know that I was. Hey, my home and go home and probably trailer stick my foot up for a while, hopefully the. Please let me do that. I will see them. So I don’t think you said you did, but I wanted to. Still to talk with you. You’re not there, pleasure working in I love you. I love you. I’ll talk to you later, bye.

Lots of love in this one and some interesting sentences.

Mac Mini Media Center PC

Yesterday I began the work of creating a media center pc for my parents.  My parents use over-the-air broadcast antenna and do not subscribe to Netflix.  They wanted something that would be pretty simple to use and something that could expand a bit as they needed.

The main use my parents wanted was to store movies, music, and pictures for quick access and display.  They already use a MacBook computer on a regular basis and the form factor of the Mac Mini was exactly what they were looking for.

Component List

  • Mac Mini ($699.00)
  • HDMI Cable 6 ft. ($19.95)
  • Apple Wireless Keyboard ($69.00)
  • Bluetooth Wireless Mouse ($49.99)
  • 1 TB External Hard Drive ($129.95)

Originally when discussing with my parents they wanted to get the Mac Mini upgraded to the 500 GB hard drive.  They would then hold off on an external hard drive until more space was needed.  The Apple Retail Stores do not carry the upgraded Mac Mini though, so we went with the 320 GB hard drive.  The external hard drive was only $30 more than the upgrade, but it was double the size and we still had the internal hard drive too.

While hooking up the system to their home entertainment center we found out that the Mac Mini does not recognize their Bose system as an eligible sound device through HDMI.  When we plugged it into their Sony Bravia TV though it did allow that.  The TV sends all sound out to the receiver anyway.

Once on and updated I started setting up the media center aspects.  They will be using iTunes to purchase, rent, and manage their movie catalog.  They also have Hulu Desktop installed for easier media center browsing of Hulu’s offerings.  Handbrake was installed so they could make personal use copies of their DVDs for playback without having to find the disc or change discs.

I have also set up remote access to the Mac Mini so that I can access and work on the Mac Mini from pretty much any computer in the house.  Remote access from their MacBook will also be another way for my parents to control the media center pc.

New Tech Network Intiative

The school district I work for has jumped head first into making a big change the the children and families we serve.  We have joined the New Tech Network initiative to push a project based learning that has a heavy focus on using technology.

The technology, while very computer focused, is not limited to computers.  Computers just play a central role in each project.  The projects may include video, audio, presentations, animation, and so much more.  Cameras, micrphones, and mice will be the new tools that students will be using quite a bit.

This will hopefully help students use what they know already in technology to learn what they don’t know in their class subjects.  They could be making videos for a Spanish/Social Studies class on the Spanish Inquisition where they make a documentary or a re-enactment.  They could use presentations in biology/math where they show the dissection and what math is involved with the body in discussion.

If embraced and effectively established this could be very beneficial for the students.  The future of business and industry is technology.  Technology is even moving into areas where it traditionally has not been.  The custodial services for our district will be using a trouble report ticketing and tracking system for maintenance and cleaning issues.
